LUSH Handmade Cosmetics is a cosmetic store that I recently discovered. The concept is organic and cruelty-free cosmetics and bath products. Although the store looks like a gimicky, hipster grocery store, the vibrant colors and displays immediately drew me in. As a graphic designer, the marketing (labels and product names) were very clever so it won me over.
I went to LUSH for a little hedonism and I meandered my way through the colorful and fragrant displays of facial masks, bath bombs, and make-up. When I approached the hair product section, a pretty young man with perfect skin and perfectly coiffed hair said, "You gotta try the R & B. You'll love it!." I put a little in my hair and immediately loved the tropical yet fragant smell: jasmine, orange, and coconut. I decided not to buy it because I had reached my limit with what I could spend. I told Pretty Young Man that I liked it and that I would consider purchasing it another time. Throughout the day, my hair smelled sexy and feminine and I felt like I had just come back from a beach vacation.
The lovely fragrance lingered on my mind so I went back to the store a few days later to purchase it. I saw Pretty Young Man again and he squealed, "You decided to come back and get the R & B!" The next day when I was getting ready for work, I put a liberal amount (dime sized) in my hair. When I dried my hair, it lacked volume and shine and it appeared to look greasy and dirty. I looked at the ingredients more closely and noticed several oil derived products: Organic avocado oil, fair trade olive oil, extra virgin coconut oil, cold pressed jojaba oil, and bay oil (you can view the entire ingredient list on the product page at http://www.lushusa.com/R-B/03080,en_US,pd.html#start=5). I had to wash my hair to get it to look bouncy and fresh again.
Aside from the residue and dullness, I was also dissatisfied with the price ($22.95) when I considered the quality of it.
PROS: (4)
Fun/Feminine Smell, Long Lasting Fragrance, Mostly Organic Ingredients, Pleasant Texture
CONS: (5)
Greasy, Ineffective, Leaves Residue, Overpriced, Overrated
VERDICT: Not for everyone.
Given that the cons slightly outnumber the pros, I would cautiously recommend this product.
RECOMMENDATION:
I would suggest using this if you have frizzy/thick hair or if you want to use this as a deep conditioner. It may even work well for keeping pin curls or other highly structured styles in place.
